Experimenting with "Monkey Style" at In-N-Out

The other day I was notified of this “secret menu” burger at In-N-Out called “Monkey Style.” To those unfamiliar with the restaurant’s secret menu, it’s essentially customizations to the burger and fries you can request.

This was something I had never heard of. I’ve done other secret menu things but never this one. A look into it and it apparently isn’t a real “secret menu” item. But I still went to try it by making my own.

The cashier confirmed that he knows about it, but it doesn’t exist. I then ordered a regular hamburger, Animal Style fries and a vanilla milkshake. I made sure I got extra sauce and my fries well done.

Delicious, fresh crab fried rice.

I’ve always liked crab fried rice whenever I go eat Thai food. In fact, it’s kind of my measuring barometer when I do eat Thai food. Sure, Pad Thai and other dishes are common, but for me, a simple crab fried rice is the way to go.

Most times when I go, it’s crab you buy from a jar or a can. It’s never fresh crab meat from a crab. But today, I finally got me some real crab.

A friend got takeout from this local Thai place and I decided to see if their crab fried rice was any good. When I got the box, I noticed real crab meat fresh from a crab along with pineapple. It was delicious and for the first time, I had real crab with my fried rice.

This isn’t to say that the other crab fried rice dishes I had were bad, but this was the first time a restaurant actually went the extra distance. That makes all the difference in a dining experience in my opinion.

Waffle tacos exist?

Waffle taco? That’s crazy! Apparently so crazy, it exists.

The waffle taco is in its testing phase and Taco Bell only has it in two locations. I’m all for fusion, but this sounds so strange. It features a sausage and scrambled egg folded into a waffle. I don’t live too far from Irvine, but is it worth a drive to look for it? I don’t think so.

But it’s a combination that sounds weird but I can’t judge until I try it.

Unfortunately I don’t live near a Dunkin’ Donuts. It’s my favorite donut place but with their new breakfast sandwich, I’m afraid they’re trying too hard. Can eggs, bacon and a glazed donut together be a good idea? I want to try. (Although such a concept isn’t that new.)

Apparently the problem is that even with people who live near a Dunkin’ Donuts, they can’t find it.

It’s not crazy to combine sweet with salty. But it has to be the right kind of sweet. Does sweetness with egg and bacon work? It can. But until I try this, I won’t know if this specific combination works.

I am curious about it and maybe one day I can try it — that is if I ever find myself near a DD.

Gotta love me some waffles.

Today is Waffle Day in Sweden. This is the day that the Swedes enjoy their waffles. And for me, why not I celebrate with them? I might head over to Roscoe’s today to celebrate or maybe go home and make my own.

Either way, this is a great day to celebrate one of my favorite breakfast foods.

I used to just eat waffles with syrup as a kid but over the years, I’ve incorporated fruit with it. Strawberries and bananas end up being my fruit of choice. But of course, the chicken and waffles combo seems to be the greatest collaboration since peanut butter and jelly gave each other high fives.

It’s a great day for some waffles. Let’s go enjoy some!

I never was into breakfast growing up. Most of the time when I got up for school, I’d skip breakfast because I wanted to sleep in and I knew I could sacrifice breakfast for an extra five minutes of sleep.

Having been told breakfast is the most important meal of the day didn’t really convince me much to make breakfast a priority. I think part of the problem is that I am usually waking up and immediately going to work. Because of that, I just didn’t have time for it.

But on my recent trip to Phoenix, I decided to actually do breakfast during my vacation. I decided to try Matt’s Big Breakfast.

 

A popular breakfast spot in Phoenix turned out to be a great winner. The plate in front is the one I had, which was the salami sampler with home fries. The salami was so thick cut and full of pepper. It was perfect.

Label this under “There’s a record for that?” category. Kim Medford’s curly fries from Arby’s featured one fry that appeared to be very long. In fact, it measured 38 inches — four inches longer than the current world record.

Of course it’s a little naive of me to think that there isn’t a record for this. There are records for everything. But I am the kind of person to just eat my fries and not even notice what they look like. Then again, I have never seen a fry that spans over three feet in length, so who knows?

It’s great publicity for Arby’s and who knows? If this does end up being the world record, you’re glad that you knew that this record exists in the first place.

This fry is 38 inches long.

Restaurant.com has had its ups and downs.

Restaurant.com — $300 in Gift Cards for only $40 for $40

I saw this on my Twitter feed and I was considering whether or not I wanted to do this. After all, such a deal is too good to pass up.

But the problem with this deal is that it’s from Restaurant.com and a lot of restaurants have shut down their affiliation with the company. Most times these restaurants have just said they don’t accept the coupons or they are forced to give back vouchers of credit.

I’ve had some good experiences with restaurants that take them. But I’ve been to other restaurants that have taken them, but told me that they won’t do it after this last time. It’s tough when a lot of great eateries are simply saying no more.

Is it that bad for restaurants that this just isn’t a profitable deal for them? I’m still on the fence about this because if I can find one restaurant that can take it, then I am good to go. But is it worth a $40 risk?

The San Francisco 49ers are set to play in the Super Bowl against the Baltimore Ravens in New Orleans this Sunday. Growing up as a 49ers fan, this is exciting. After covering them for three seasons, it’s bittersweet for me to see them go to the Super Bowl. I am happy for them but since I don’t cover the team anymore, I can’t be there to watch them in the Super Bowl.

However, I did get a chance to stop by the Bay Area this weekend and I wanted to feel like I was in New Orleans. I decided to stop by a very popular Louisiana Style Kitchen in Berkeley called Angeline’s to get my Southern Food fix.

The wait there took about 20 minutes on a Sunday night but the environment was very comfortable. The service was fantastic and the ambience felt very New Orleans with images from the city and culture.

I had a friend visiting and he was staying near the UCLA dorms.  He suggested that we get some lunch. Since I am not familiar with the location, I just did a Google search of top places to eat near UCLA. There weren’t really a lot of great finds but I did come across this one place called the Hole in the Wall Burger Joint.

The concept presented on the site wasn’t new, but it was pretty cool to try something different. We decided to go the the new location in Santa Monica and I decided to make my burger as unique as possible. I had to fill out this small form and take it to the register for my order. I decided to use a fake name for fun too.
